Fine Jewellery Charms Us Every Time!

Whether baubles or beads, as young girls we recognized the ways fine jewellery charmed us. We fell in love with the way the light hit a gemstone on that perfect angle causing a vibrant prism to erupt around us. We were equally enamoured by overstated, chunky designs that seemed to take their creation from the wildest part of our imagination.

There are all types of jewellery to be worn; earrings, necklaces, rings, bangles, bracelets, toe rings, brooches, tiaras, the list is limitless. Clunky and big or elegant and small, the fact is we like to adorn ourselves in jewellery. Bright, sparkly, pretty objects seem to catch our eye the most. We gravitate toward the brilliance and sparkle bouncing off a multi-faceted diamond, or the shiny reflection of a glass-cut pendant.

Jewellery can be handcrafted or designer made. These two distinctive types of jewellery tap into very different regions of our brain. One region speaks to our high-fashion glamour-puss and the other to our down-to-earth emotional self.

In an age of redefining what is womanly, designer jewellery carries an air of luxury, style and mystique. When we buy a designer's piece we feel connected to something larger than ourselves, it's like a rite of passage into some secret society of ageless beauties housing the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly. Designer and fine jewellery alike bears the reputation of elegance and refinery, of good taste and wealth. It is the ultimate symbol of how we view ourselves and how we want the world to perceive us.

For those women who can afford to splurge, designer and fine jewellery can be the ultimate statement in individuality and exclusivity. The sky is the limit with imagination; we can go to a designer and have them create the perfect piece that resonates with our inner sense of self.

Conversely, handmade jewellery can be emotionally binding. Either our girlfriends have convinced us to take a class on jewellery making and we have vowed to keep the very first pair of earrings we ever made, or we painstakingly sat with our beloved daughters and patiently braided tiny shreds of yarn together to create friendship bracelets that would last the test of time. These threaded creations may be lacking in the luxury department but are beautiful in their own rite.

Handmade jewellery is unique in an artisan-inspired kind of way and tugs at our emotional cords. Many talented artists are able to piece together varying elements into magnificent showpieces. For instance, Navajo women have been combining silver and gemstones for hundreds of years and their expertise and craft weaves a story into every sliver of silver.

A distinctive piece of jewellery can make us feel glamorous, graceful, and beautiful. The challenge is deciding between a unique handmade piece that we may hold an emotional attachment to and a designer piece that effuses that enviable je ne sais quoi. Each woman has her own preference. Designer pieces exude a luxurious and exclusive feel while handmade pieces offer a unique and sentimental alternative.
